Statement on the Death of Roscoe R. Nix

Civil Rights Leader Roscoe R. Nix, a member of the Montgomery County Board of Education from 1974 to 1978, passed away on Wednesday. Mr. Nix served as Director of the Maryland Human Relations Commission and President of the Montgomery County branch of the NAACP (1980-1990). He was the co-founder of the Montgomery County African American Festival of Academic Excellence, which recognizes, encourages and celebrates African American students.

In 1997, Mr. Nix received a Distinguished Service Award from the Board of Education and in 2006, Roscoe R. Nix Elementary School was named in his honor.

Superintendent of Schools Joshua P. Starr and Board of Education President Shirley Brandman released the following statement:

“Roscoe Nix spent his entire adult life working for educational and social equality for all and his work has improved the lives of countless people in Montgomery County and throughout the region and the nation. As Director of the Maryland Human Relations Commission, a member of the Board of Education and the president of the Montgomery County branch of the NAACP, Mr. Nix was an agent of change and leader in every sense of the word. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends as they not only mourn his passing, but celebrate his life and all he accomplished.”
