Statement on the Montgomery County Executive’s Recommended FY 2015 Operating Budget

March 17, 2014
Board of Education President Phil Kauffman and Montgomery County Public Schools Superintendent Joshua P. Starr released the following statement on County Executive Isiah Leggett’s Operating Budget recommendation for Fiscal Year 2015:

"We appreciate that the Montgomery County Executive has, for the first time in six years, recommended a budget that goes above the minimum funding level required by state law. We are, however, concerned that he chose to reduce the Board’s very reasonable budget request by $15 million. Those funds were specifically targeted to benefit our most vulnerable students by, among other things, reducing class sizes in high-need high schools, improving services to English Language Learners, adding prekindergarten classes, expanding community partnerships that serve students and families, and hiring more counselors and student support staff. It is our hope that the County Council will seriously consider restoring the $15 million, which is a very small percentage of the overall budget but will have a significant impact on how we serve our county's students.”
