MEDIA ADVISORY: Students from Parkland Middle to Get a Behind-The-Scenes Look at NASA Projects

Students from Parkland Magnet Middle School will be introduced to engineers and scientists working on some of NASA’s most groundbreaking projects, and will go behind the scenes of actual space missions that explore the relationship between Earth and the Sun. This unique experience is part of Space Academy, a program launched in 2000 and sponsored by the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) and Discovery Education.

The daylong event will feature a briefing on a selected mission, a simulated student press conference with mission team members, lunchtime discussions with scientists and engineers, and a behind-the-scenes look inside the Applied Physics Lab. Also participating are students from Annapolis Middle School in Anne Arundel County and Clarksville Middle School in Howard County. Leading up to the Space Academy, students learned about the mission, its science theme, and space-related careers through classroom activities and videos developed by the Applied Physics Lab.

The Applied Physics Laboratory, a not-for-profit division of The Johns Hopkins University, meets critical national challenges through the innovative application of science and technology.

WHO: Approximately 115 students and teachers from Parkland Magnet Middle School in Montgomery County and two other Maryland schools—Annapolis Middle School (Anne Arundel County) and Clarksville Middle School (Howard County).
