September 27, 2001
Thirty-one 12th grade students have been named scholars in the National Hispanic Recognition Program, and another two have received honorable mention awards.

The local winners represent almost half of the 68 scholars and four honorable mention awardees chosen in Maryland. Nationwide, about 4,000 students were selected as scholars or honorable mention finalists.

Richard Montgomery High School had six scholars and one honorable mention, followed by Walt Whitman High School with three scholars and Montgomery Blair, Winston Churchill, Gaithersburg, Paint Branch, Rockville and Thomas S. Wootton high schools with two scholars each. Walter Johnson High School had one scholar and one honorable mention. Bethesda-Chevy Chase, James Hubert Blake, Damascus, Albert Einstein, Northwest, Quince Orchard, Sherwood, Springbrook and Wheaton high schools each had one scholar.

Students receiving awards were selected based on their performance on the Preliminary Scholastic Assessment Test/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test as high school juniors, plus further evidence of academic achievement. Students with a GPA of 3.5 or higher were named scholars, and those with a GPA of 3.0 to 3.49 received honorable mention.

Although the recognition carries no financial award, a list of all honored students is sent to colleges and universities around the nation to encourage recruitment and financial support.

The National Hispanic Recognition Program is sponsored by the College Board in Washington, D.C.
