Thomas S. Wootton High School was named today [Thursday, November 15] by the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) as one of nine public middle and high schools to receive the 2001 award as a Maryland Blue Ribbon School of Excellence.

To receive the award, Wootton had to demonstrate high achievement in areas including student performance, instruction, parent and community involvement, and professional development.

"Wootton High School continues a long tradition in Montgomery County in winning this award for excellence," said Dr. Jerry D. Weast, superintendent of schools. "The school has a strong academic program, exceptional instructional leadership by the principal, and a quality faculty and staff who serve as a model for doing the right thing for students and families."

A panel of educators and community leaders judges all applicants. The selections alternate each year between elementary and secondary schools. This year, Wootton was one of three high schools and six middle schools throughout the state to receive the award.

"These schools stand as models for Maryland, an inspiration for all," said State Superintendent Nancy S. Grasmick in announcing the awards today.

Maryland's Blue Ribbon Schools will become part of a state network of Blue Ribbon Schools working with the Maryland State Department of Education in school improvement and policy. In addition, each of the recent awardees will be reviewed by the U.S. Department of Education as a candidate for National Blue Ribbon status.

"We're proud about this recognition," said Dr. Rebecca Newman, principal of Wootton High School. "Our teachers, staff, students and parents have worked very hard to make our school one of the best in the state, and now we're thrilled to be part of the national competition."

The schools will be honored by the Maryland State Board of Education on December 5. In addition, the state hosts a gala awards dinner each spring. Winning schools receive a Maryland Blue Ribbon Flag and a $1,000 cash award from the Maryland State Department of Education. Corporate sponsors also provide instructional materials and other awards.
