Board of Education Meeting Summary, November 27

The Board of Education met on Tuesday, November 27, and, among other items, approved the Fiscal Year 2003 Capital Budget and Fiscal Year 2003-2008 Capital Improvements Program, approved boundary changes for elementary schools in the Quince Orchard Cluster, and set boundaries for Einstein Middle School #2.

Capital Budget

The Board approved a FY 2003 Capital Budget appropriation request totaling $100.3 million, a FY 2003-2008 Capital Improvements Program request totaling $645.4 million, and a FY 2003 State CIP request of $22.11 million for FY 2003. Also approved was an elementary school boundary study of Gaithersburg and Strawberry Knoll elementary schools in the Gaithersburg Cluster, to be conducted in spring 2002 to relieve projected overuse at Gaithersburg Elementary School.

Quince Orchard Cluster Boundary Changes

The Board of Education approved boundary changes for elementary schools in the Quince Orchard Cluster to relieve projected overuse of Rachel Carson Elementary School. The Quince Orchard Knolls and Potomac Preserve communities are reassigned from Rachel Carson to Thurgood Marshall Elementary School, and the Brighton West Condominiums are reassigned from Rachel Carson to Jones Lane Elementary School, both starting with kindergarten through Grade 4 in September 2002.

Einstein Middle School #2 Boundaries

The Board established boundaries for the new Albert Einstein Middle School #2 in the Einstein Cluster. Reassigned to Einstein Middle School Grades 6 and 7, effective in September 2002, are the entire Rock View Elementary School service area; the area east of Valleywood Drive, south of Henderson Avenue and east of Judson Road in the Highland Elementary School area; and the area west of Georgia Avenue in the Oakland Terrace Elementary School service area. Other areas continue to be assigned to Sligo Middle School.
