Public Hearing on Computer and Network Security in Schools

May 14, 2002
A public hearing has been scheduled by the Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) to receive community comments on proposed revisions to the administrative regulation governing student and staff use of computer systems and networks in compliance with the requirements of the federal Children’s Internet Protection Act (CIPA).

The hearing is scheduled for June 6, 2002, in the auditorium of Carver Educational Services Center at 850 Hungerford Drive in Rockville from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Individuals wishing to speak at the meeting may call Sharon Patten at 301 279-3582. Each individual will be allotted three minutes to speak in the order that calls are received. Groups will be allotted five minutes.

A PDF copy of the proposed revisions to administrative regulation IGT-RA is available at the link below or by calling 301-279-3582.

The proposed revisions are consistent with actions being taken throughout the nation in response to CIPA, a federal law addressing Internet safety in schools and libraries. In compliance with the law, the school system has revised administrative regulation IGT-RA to address issues related to the safety and security of minors and adults while using the internet and electronic communication.

The hearing is being held jointly by the school system’s offices of Global Access Technology and Instruction and Program Development as part of the federal requirement to update and strengthen computer and technology protections for students and staff.
