Highlights of the June 24 Meeting of the Board of Education

The Board of Education met yesterday [June 24] and, among other items, reviewed an update on a new model of Career and Technology Education, rescinded a policy on the employee benefit trust fund, appointed eleven administrators - including eight principals - and recognized members of MCPS - University partnerships.

Update on Career and Technology Education Reform

The Board discussed an update on the new model of Career and Technology Education. The model focuses on a rigorous curriculum that aligns with work force development needs and other relevant criteria. Career clusters grouped by common skill sets provide the basis for developing smaller learning communities within the high school program.

Rescission of Policy EIE, Employee Benefit Trust Fund

The Board voted to rescind policy EIE, Employee Benefit Trust Fund, that covers issues of medical coverage for retirees that are no longer accurate and relevant.

Administrative Appointments

The Board appointed the following principals and other administrators:

§ Eileen Lancellotti Dempsey, currently an assistant principal at John F. Kennedy High School, as principal of Shady Grove Middle School.

§ Robert G. Domergue, currently principal of Robert Frost Middle School, as principal of Damascus High School.

§ Sharron M. Hayes, currently principal of Burgin Elementary School in Arlington, Texas, as principal of Cloverly Elementary School.

§ Anita A. Murphy, currently elementary principal intern at Washington Grove Elementary School, as principal of Cedar Grove Elementary School.

§ Kathryn E. Schiavone, currently elementary principal intern at Somerset Elementary School, as principal of Fields Road Elementary School.

§ Adrian B. Talley, currently principal of Hutchinson Elementary School in Pelham, New York, as principal of Rosemont Elementary School.

§ Dr. Vera D. Torrence, formerly principal of Meadow Hall Elementary School and returning from academic leave, as principal of Jackson Road Elementary School.

§ Ralph Viggiano, currently principal of Piney Ridge Elementary School in the Carroll County Public Schools, Westminster, Maryland, as principal of Rosemary Hills Elementary School.

§ Elizabeth R. Brown, currently high school instructional specialist, Office of Instruction and Program Development, as program supervisor, Secondary English/Language Arts, Office of Instruction and Program Development.

§ Roy L. Higgins, currently a private consultant, as director, Division of Maintenance.

§ Dr. James M. Walsh, currently coordinator of special education, Anne Arundel County Public Schools, as supervisor, Pre-K-12 Special Education Instruction, Office of Instruction and Program Development.

MCPS - University Partnerships

The Board presented certificates of recognition to representatives of MCPS - University partnership institutions that offer academic degree programs in education to school system staff. The programs, which facilitate study in conjunction with work responsibilities, are provided by the University of Maryland, Bowie State University, George Washington University, and Johns Hopkins University.
