Three New Saturday Schools to Enhance Academic Opportunities

September 30, 2002
Montgomery Blair, Gaithersburg, and Wheaton high schools will host ceremonies to mark the opening of three new Saturday School programs under the direction of the George B. Thomas, Sr. Learning Academy, Inc. Several hundred students, along with parents and staff, will attend the opening sessions. Members of the community also are welcome to attend.

Saturday schools are open to students in Grades 1-12 on Saturday mornings during the school year. The programs, which are free-of-charge to students, are designed to provide an enriched academic experience, tutoring, and mentoring to students.

The three new sites bring the total number of Saturday School programs in the school system to eight. In addition to the three new locations, other high school sites include Sherwood, Springbrook, Kennedy, Paint Branch and Northwest high schools. Approximately 2,000 students are expected to attend the eight Saturday School programs this year.
