MEDIA ADVISORY: MCPS to Celebrate Annual Drive for Supplies and Summer Food Service Program on July 16

July 12, 2018

Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) will celebrate its Drive for Supplies and Summer Food Service programs with a media event on Monday, July 16, 2018, at Montgomery Village Middle School.

Drive for Supplies

Each summer, MCPS distributes new and gently used school supplies to Montgomery County families in need. The supplies come from MCPS students and staff who collect and donate supplies as they clean out lockers, desks and closets at the end of the school year. Last year, MCPS distributed more than 4,000 pounds of school supplies.

Drive for Supplies, now in its 19th year, has generated more than 95 tons of school supplies. The program is a collaboration between Learn Shop, Inc., and MCPS.

Immediately following the event, MCPS schools, families and nonprofit agencies may pick up free supplies for students who need them.

Summer Food Service Program

Funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the MCPS Summer Food Service Program was created in 1976 to bridge the summer break nutrition gap by providing nutritious meals at no cost to children 18 years of age and younger.

This summer, the district anticipates that approximately 10,000 students will receive meals at 121 sites, including 12 walk-in locations. Staff from the MCPS Division of Food and Nutrition Services prepare and deliver the food to all of the program sites in the county. Last year, the program provided more than 420,000 meals. Attendees will have an opportunity to see the mobile summer meals truck that provides meals to the Germantown Library and the Middlebrook Mobile Home Park in Germantown, as well as examples of meals that students receive.
