Second Annual Summer RISE Career Exposure for MCPS High School Students

July 18, 2018

WorkSource Montgomery, Inc. (WSM) presents the second year of Summer RISE (Real Interesting Summer Experience), a locally funded initiative led by WSM in partnership with Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS), that provides rising MCPS juniors and seniors with enriching career development experiences.

“Summer RISE is a truly groundbreaking program unlike any other in the region or state that gave more than 300 students a gateway into the career world last summer,” said WSM CEO Dr. Ellie Giles. “Different from a job or an internship, the program offers experiential learning through shadowing as well as through student mentoring. In keeping with WorkSource Montgomery’s mission, Summer RISE helps ensure we are adequately preparing the next generation for professional success.”

For three weeks, through July 27, Summer RISE students are participating in career development opportunities (averaging 20 hours per week) introducing them to the structure of organizations and the industries in which they reside, professionalism in the workplace, the role of technology, and the importance of customer service. Students have participated in both online and in-person professionalism trainings to prepare for their experience and will earn stipends at the end of the program.

“Montgomery County Public Schools is delighted the Summer RISE program introduces our rising juniors and seniors to career options prior to graduating from high school. The more exposure our students get to possible career paths, the better off they will be when deciding what direction to take,” said Superintendent Jack Smith. “We are grateful that our county businesses and organizations take great interest in our youth and community.”

Among the more than 140 host organizations participating is MedImmune, the global biologics research and development arm of AstraZeneca. “As an organization we live and breathe science and medicine,” said Steve Bjornson, Vice President of Global Business Planning and Operations. “And, we want to ensure we engage and inspire the next generation of potential scientists.  Summer RISE is the perfect opportunity to do so. Last year, we participated in the program and we had a great experience.”

Other notable hosts participating are:

CVS Health, Donohoe Construction Company, Holy Cross Health, Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning, Montgomery County Public Libraries, Montgomery County Fire & Rescue, Montgomery County Police Department, Henley Construction Company, Marriott International, and the many departments and offices of the Montgomery County Public Schools.

Summer RISE will host a closing celebration at Smokey Glen Farm in Gaithersburg, Maryland on July 27, 2018 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., where hosts, students, partners and media entities are invited. Learn more about Summer RISE at Summer-rise.com
