MCPS Makes Changes to Requirements for Substitute Teachers

Job applicants who have earned at least 60 college credits can apply to become substitute teachers with Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS).

Historically, candidates have needed a minimum of a bachelor’s degree to work as a substitute teacher for MCPS. The rise in substitute vacancies, coupled with steady enrollment growth, has led the school system to revisit this policy. The move also brings MCPS into alignment with other regional school systems, including Frederick, Howard and Prince George’s counties, as well as Fairfax County, all of which require 60 college credits for substitute teacher eligibility.

MCPS received feedback from partners, including Montgomery College, the Montgomery County Council of PTAs (MCCPTA), school-based staff, teachers, principals and employee associations.  

MCPS expects this change to increase the number of available substitutes; decrease unfilled vacancies; limit the need for in-school class coverage; lead to a more diverse range of candidates; and help build partnerships with local colleges while candidates earn their degree.
