The Board of Education met yesterday [October 28] and, among other items, adopted a revised policy on Parental Involvement and reviewed boundary change options. The Board also discussed an update on the Office of Global Access Technology and the school system’s response to the recent shooting incidents. In addition, a participation period for the Montgomery County Employees’ Charity Campaign was designated.

Policy ABC, Parental Involvement

The Board voted to adopt a revised Policy ABC, Parental Involvement, following an extended period of public comment. The policy promotes effective, comprehensive involvement of all parents in the education process.

Elementary School Boundary Changes

The Board discussed boundary change options for Gaithersburg, Strawberry Knoll, and Judith A. Resnik elementary schools, directed at relieving Gaithersburg Elementary School’s projected overutilization by taking advantage of capacity available at Strawberry Knoll Elementary School. The Board is scheduled to take action on the boundary change at a meeting on November 21st.

Update on the Office of Global Access Technology

The Board reviewed a report on the work of the Office of Global Access Technology. Among school system priorities addressed were the Technology Modernization Program, the Instructional Management System, information technology security, and E-learning technology.

Dialogue on Current Issues

The Board and the superintendent engaged in a dialogue regarding the school system’s response to the recent shooting crisis and efforts to document “lessons learned.”

Montgomery County Employees’ Charity Campaign

The Board approved the period of October 28 through December 13, 2002, for participation in the Montgomery County Employees’ Charity Campaign. Employees were urged to donate to the campaign as a reflection of their commitment to addressing the needs of people who need support.
