New Parent Resource Center at Newport Mill Middle

November 1, 2002
A grand opening ceremony on November 7 at 9:00 a.m. will launch the new Parents’ Place at Newport Mill Middle School in Kensington, the first parent resource center housed in a secondary school. The Parents’ Place will serve parents and community members throughout Montgomery County.

The new parent center will offer training and information on a wide variety of topics that have an impact on children’s academic success and will serve as a bridge between home and school. Someone is available daily to talk with parents by telephone, and there are informal weekly "drop-in" sessions offered from 9:30 to 11:00 a.m. on Tuesdays (in English) and Thursdays (in Spanish).

The Parents’ Place is part of a network of Parent Information and Training Centers throughout Maryland created in collaboration with the Maryland State Department of Education in the 1980’s. The Montgomery County program was formerly housed at the Lynnbrook Center in Bethesda. The new location will provide increased accessibility and enhanced services to the community.
