Board Meeting Summary, 6/21/99: Board Approves Request to Expand Security Cameras to All High Schools, Appoints Four New School Principals

The Board of Education met yesterday evening [Monday, June 21] and, among other items, approved an emergency capital budget request for funding to accelerate the implementation of security cameras next year in all high schools as a safety and deterrent measure against school violence and crime. The Board also appointed four new principals.

In addition, the Board discussed a report on gender equity and the availability of playing fields for community use. The Board recognized Odyssey of the Mind winners and approved the preliminary plans for modernization of Wood Acres Elementary.

Security Cameras for High Schools

The Board approved a request to the county executive and County Council for an emergency supplemental appropriation and amendment to the Fiscal Year 1999-2004 Capital Improvements Program for $685,000 to accelerate and complete the installation of closed-circuit television systems as a security measure in all high schools. If approved, the camera systems would be installed during the 1999-2000 school year.

Personnel Appointments

The Board approved the following administrative appointments:

  • Dr. Joan V. Cisz, currently principal of Twinbrook Elementary School, as the new principal of Rock Terrace School.

  • Ms. Katherine (Katy) Harvey, currently principal of Rio Rancho High School in New Mexico, as the new principal of Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School.

  • Ms. JoAnn A. Leleck, currently elementary principal intern at Rosemont Elementary School, as the new principal of Broad Acres Elementary School.

  • Dr. Judith F. Lewis, currently principal of Centerville Elementary School in Virginia Beach, Virginia, as the new principal of Kensington Parkwood Elementary School.

    Gender Equity Advisory Committee Report

    The Board discussed a report by the Title IX Gender Equity Advisory Committee, which included recommendations regarding gender equity in technology education, expanded sexual harassment training, and development of a Title IX website.

    Ballfield Work Group Report

    The Board discussed the report of an interagency work group assigned to assess and document the availability of playing fields in the county and among schools, with the goal of increasing the use of such fields for the public.

    Odyssey of the Mind

    The Board recognized students of Takoma Park Middle School who won first place in the Maryland State Finals of the Odyssey of the Mind contest and competed in the world finals in Knoxville, Tennessee.

    Wood Acres Modernization

    The Board approved the preliminary plan report for the modernization of Wood Acres Elementary School, scheduled to be completed by July 2001.
