Board Advisory Committee Members Sought
April 3, 2003
The Montgomery County Board of Education is seeking adults and public school students to serve on two major committees that advise the Board of Education on important and timely educational, curricular, and policy issues that include Career and Technology Education and Family Life and Human Development.
The advisory committees serve an important role in providing guidance and counsel to the Board of Education and the superintendent of schools in the development and review of new and revised policies, as well as other educational curricular issues during the school year.
Appointments are two years for adults for the Family Life and Human Development Committee and three years for the Career and Technology Education Committee. Students serve one year (July 1 to June 30). Unless exempted by the Board, no member shall serve for more than two consecutive terms. Members serve without compensation. Committee meetings are typically held in the evening about once a month.
The Board of Education makes every effort to appoint advisory committees in which the membership is balanced by geographic area, race, ethnicity, gender, and range of viewpoints. A number of vacancies exist on each committee; therefore, all interested individuals are encouraged to apply. Non-profit organizations and associations also are welcome to nominate individuals.
Applications must be received by close of business on Friday, May 9, 2003, for appointments to be made at the Board meeting on June 10, 2003.
To obtain a committee application, contact Becky Gibson by telephone at 301-279-3301 or e-mail her at Becky_Gibson@fc.mcps.k12.md.us. Application forms also may be completed by accessing them at www.mcps.k12.md.us/boe. Completed applications should be returned to Mr. George Margolies, staff director, Montgomery County Board of Education, 850 Hungerford Drive, Room 123, Rockville, Maryland 20850. Students wishing to serve should contact the Student Affairs Office at 301-279-4957.
Should you wish additional information as to the workings of these committees, please contact Barry Burke, staff liaison to the Career and Technology Education Committee, at 301-279-3567, or Russell Henke, staff liaison to the Family Life and Human Development Committee, at 301-279-3059.
