Discovery Space Shuttle Astronaut Lisa Nowak will discuss her recent space mission with students at Tilden Middle School and Luxmanor Elementary School on Thursday, October 19.

Nowak will speak to students at 9:30 a.m. at Tilden Middle School and 1:45 p.m. at Luxmanor Elementary School.. Nowak was a mission specialist aboard the Discovery during its July 2006 space mission. Her primary responsibility included the operation of the shuttle’s robotic arm. She will show students a DVD of the mission and also answer students’ questions during her presentation.
Nowak grew up in Rockville, Maryland, and attended both Luxmanor and Tilden prior to graduating from Charles W. Woodward High School in 1981. The high school closed in 1987 and now houses Tilden Middle School. She attended the U.S. Naval Academy, where she majored in aerospace engineering. After graduate study in aerospace engineering and participation in Navy flight school, she was selected for the Navy Test Pilot School and, subsequently, for the space shuttle program at NASA.
