Discoverer of Titanic To Address Students
October 20, 2006
Titanic-Discoverer to Share Secrets of Deep-Sea Explorations with Students at Herbert Hoover Middle School and Winston Churchill High School
Explorer and oceanographer Dr. Robert Ballard will recount some of his notable adventures for Herbert Hoover Middle School students, Winston Churchill High School students, teachers, and parents. Dr. Ballard will describe some of his deep-sea discoveries, including discovering the R.M.S. Titanic, and his plans for future expeditions as a means to impress upon students the importance of scientific and technical literacy.
Among the participants in the program will be Senator Barbara Mikulski, Superintendent of Schools Jerry D. Weast, and President of the Board of Education Charles Haughey.
Dr. Ballard’s visit is sponsored by the Ashburn, Virginia-based JASON Project—a national program that inspires middle school students to excel in science through an innovative multimedia curriculum developed in collaboration with NOAA, NASA, and the National Geographic Society. This year, approximately 60 students at Herbert Hoover Middle School will participate in a science class using JASON materials.
The presentation will be held on:
Tuesday, October 24
1:00 p.m. to 2:15 p.m.
Winston Churchill High School, Gertrude Bish auditorium
11300 Gainsborough Road, Potomac, MD
Interviews are available with students and participants
before the presentation from 12:15 p.m. until 12:55 p.m.
