Students Receive Special Invitation to White House Easter Egg Roll

March 23, 2010
Students from two elementary schools in Montgomery County will be among other students in the region to experience the excitement of participating in the 2010 White House Easter Egg Roll on April 5, thanks to tickets provided by The White House and the office of U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan. “Ready, Set, Go!” is the theme of this year’s event, encouraging young people to be active and make healthy choices. The theme compliments the "Let's Move!" initiative of First Lady Michelle Obama to combat childhood obesity.

Cresthaven and Clopper Milll elementary schools were selected to receive the tickets in part because of the strong performance of their students on the Maryland School Assessment. Many of the students at both schools are English language learners or are eligible for free and reduced-price school meals.

Both schools have programs that encourage healthy eating and exercise. The Girls on the Run Club at Cresthaven meets regularly after school and has participated in two mini-marathons with students and staff from other schools. Cresthaven also sponsors a step and jump rope club, as well as basketball and dance clubs. The entire school will participate in a Jump Rope for the Heart event to benefit the American Heart Association from April 26 through 28.

Clopper Mill Elementary School is one of forty-four schools in the state of Maryland to be recognized for excellence in nutrition and physical activity by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). In school year 2009, Clopper Mill earned a silver award by meeting requirements for healthy food choices and exercise outlined by the USDA Healthier U.S. School Challenge.
