These are just some of the terms that are everyday language for the 25 student scientists who were honored May 6 at the close of their Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) internships. The students presented the results of research they conducted in labs at the National Institutes of Health. Seven teachers who completed internships last summer also were recognized.

The Student Teacher Internship Program (STIP) is one of the largest pre-college science education grants sponsored by HHMI. For more than two decades, the program has put middle and high school teachers and high school juniors and seniors in labs at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), where they conduct hands-on research alongside professional scientists.
