MCPS Graduates Earn More Than $232 Million in Scholarships

June 9, 2011

Montgomery County Public Schools Class of 2011 has earned $232.8 million in college scholarships to date—significantly more than the Class of 2010 had accumulated as their commencement season began. The total value of scholarships earned is expected to grow over the next few weeks as final data are gathered.

“Once again, our students have demonstrated the value of meeting high academic standards,” said Dr. Jerry D. Weast, superintendent of schools. “Of first importance is the intrinsic value of learning, but the value of these scholarships is a substantial monetary return on that learning investment.”

“I am so proud of these talented students,” said Board of Education President Christopher Barclay. “Their success is a testament to their hard work, the support of their families, and the guidance and encouragement provided to them by dedicated school system employees.”

There are many additional accomplishments of the Class of 2011. Among them are:

- 145 National Merit Finalists
- 34 National Hispanic Recognition Finalists
- 16 National Achievement Finalists
- 91 Maryland Distinguished Scholar Finalists
- 152 Ivy League school acceptances
