Hundreds of MCPS Students to Participate in Annual Frontiers in Science and Medicine Day

More than 500 seventh grade Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) students will learn about exciting career opportunities in science and medicine during the 4th annual Frontiers in Science and Medicine Day tomorrow, October 26, 2012, at Universities at Shady Grove in Rockville.

Students from Forest Oak and Neelsville middle schools will spend the day participating in various science activities, including interacting with a robotic arm, playing a video game used by surgeons for training, and making slime using basic chemistry techniques. In addition to the hands-on activities, students will have the opportunity to spend time in a local laboratory learning about what scientists do each day.

Superintendent of Schools Joshua P. Starr said he hopes that the Frontiers in Science and Medicine Day will help foster student interest in these critical fields.

“We want our students to know that science and math are relevant and are absolutely critical in order for them to thrive in the 21^st century,” said Dr. Starr. “We are grateful for the partnership that provides our students a chance to experience real-world applications of what they are learning in the classroom.”

The event is sponsored by Johns Hopkins University’s Montgomery County campus, the National Center for Translational Sciences (NCATS), Shady Grove Adventist Hospital and the Universities at Shady Grove with the support of 20 local private companies, universities, healthcare organizations and research centers.
