MEDIA ADVISORY: Thousands of MCPS Students Head to Strathmore This Week

October 20, 2014

New Grade 5 program focuses on the Blues

More than 20,000 Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) elementary school students will visit the Music Center at Strathmore this fall for the 10th annual Strathmore Student Concerts. The first series of concerts for Grade 5 students will begin on Tuesday, October 21, 2014 and will feature a new program centered on Blues music.

MCPS and Strathmore have collaborated with the preeminent jazz education organization JazzReach to offer the new Blues program for the Grade 5 concerts. The new program celebrates the diversity of cultures and traditions that has made American music what it is today. The concerts were developed to align with the MCPS music curriculum, addressing key concepts that Grade 5 students will master during the school year. All elementary music teachers have preconcert lessons to prepare students for their experience and strengthen their understanding of concepts contained in the program. The concerts will also show students how Blues is the foundation for other musical genres, including rock ‘n’ roll, gospel, and R&B.

The Strathmore Student Concerts for Grade 2 students will be held November 18-21 and will continue to focus on classical music in partnership with the National Philharmonic.
