The Board of Education today [Monday, July 2] approved a contract amendment that expresses its desire to extend the employment of Dr. Jerry D. Weast as superintendent of the Montgomery County Public Schools for another four years after the completion of his current term.

The amendment was signed today by Board of Education President Nancy J. King and Dr. Weast following unanimous action by the Board to approve the authorizing resolution.

“The Board of Education believes that retaining Jerry D. Weast as superintendent of schools for an additional four-year term is in the best interest of the school system,” said Mrs. King in reading the resolution. “The superintendent has exhibited leadership and skill in managing the Montgomery County Public Schools in accordance with the direction established by the Board of Education.”

In the agreement, the Board stated its intention to appoint Dr. Weast to a four-year term beginning July 1, 2003, and Dr. Weast stated his intention to accept such a contract offer and forego efforts on his part to seek employment elsewhere. Under Maryland law, the Board cannot make the appointment prior to February 1, 2003.

The amendment provides that should the Board not renew Dr. Weast’s contract and the superintendent is otherwise qualified, available, and able, then Dr. Weast would receive a year’s salary as additional compensation at the end of his current term.
