B-CC High School Students Build Peace Park

March 11, 2003
Ninth grade students at Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School will construct a Peace Park in commemoration of atomic bomb victims in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The park will be in the atrium across from the school’s main office, and construction will take place from 7:45 a.m. until 9:00 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 13.

Students will construct and display projects dedicated to the search for peace within themselves, and paper cranes will line the walls. The Peace Park will be displayed at the school for a week, at which time projects will be taken down and sent to the International Peace Museum in Hiroshima, Japan.

The participants are ninth grade students, members of the school's Ninth Grade Academy. The academy meshes the disciplines of history and English, making connections for students between literary materials and historical events. These skills help students realize the links between themselves and the world around them.
