Dear MCPS Community,
Saturday marks 20 years since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, a solemn anniversary of one of the darkest moments in American history. Nearly 3,000 lives were lost that day in New York City, at the Pentagon outside Washington, D.C., and in Shanksville, Penn. Directly or indirectly, everyone’s life was forever changed on that Tuesday morning.
As we take a moment to reflect on this anniversary, let us remember those we lost because of the attacks and the military actions that followed. Let us remember the people who risked their lives to save others. Let us collectively reflect on the lessons of that day.
Very few, if any, of our students were alive on Sept. 11, 2001, and many of our teachers, administrators and staff were too young to fully understand what was happening. It is important that we honestly discuss what occurred that day and, in the weeks, months and years that followed. The 9/11 Memorial and Museum has many resources that teachers and parents can use to begin those discussions. But, as is often the case, it is important that we listen as much as we teach.
At MCPS, we remember the way our staff helped our students process what had occurred and overcome the sense of fear and helplessness that we all felt. Our schools were part of the healing process, much like they are today as we continue to feel the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.
To our MCPS families and colleagues who lost loved ones on Sept. 11, 2001, we are thinking of you on this day. For the rest of us, let us commit to honest reflection and discussion. Let us reject the urge to assign blame and point fingers. Let us reject the type of hatred that gave rise to the events of 9/11 and the acts of violence and discrimination that followed. In the MCPS community we remain committed to creating a unified, pluralistic community based on mutual respect and peace. Let us never forget. Let us use this anniversary as an opportunity to build understanding, foster tolerance and seek peace.
With deepest regards,
Brenda Wolff, president, Montgomery County Board of Education
Monifa B. McKnight, interim superintendent, Montgomery County Public Schools
